I stayed at QT Canberra with my sister and brother in law for 3 nights leading up to New Years day 2017. We had 2 rooms on level 10 of the hotel.
The hotel is located right at the start of London Cct in Canberra’s CBD. This is great for ease of access to pretty much anywhere and also was far enough away from the center of the CBD to make driving and parking a breeze.
The hotel has a political art deco feel with pictures of former prime ministers everywhere as well as other political figures.
The foyer gives off a feel that the rooms will be far more fancy than they are. The downstairs restaurants, bars and other facilities are quite 5 star while the rooms (and the hotel) is only 4 star.
Step inside the rooms and they are decorated fairly similar with a large emphasis on minibar items. There is alcohol both in the minibar, above it and on a table by the balcony door ready for you to purchase with items ranging from $4 up to well over $100.
Everything in the room is for sale with a list of items you can buy from the hotel including the kettle, soap dish holder, robes, umbrellas, glasses, art work on the walls, hair dryer and other little novelty items such as an LED Queen Elizabeth toy to an emergency sex kit.
During our stay we avoided any in room purchases.
The room wasn’t huge but it was comfortable with a Queen size bed and a large TV. The TV offers up free movies (some new releases) which was great and passed the time of a night.
The bathroom was small but had a nice sized shower with rainfall shower head. The soaps weren’t too bad and the linen was soft.
The hotel’s car parking wasn’t the best with a small car park underneath the building and at the rear costing $12 per day if you can park elsewhere I recommend it. We never managed to get a park in either car park during our stay as it was always full up.
We opted for the daily breakfast in the Capitol Bar and Grill downstairs. The food is quite good with offerings you won’t find in other hotels. They had cuts of cold meats including smoked salmon and they’d make you eggs anyway you like them on the spot (including omelets).
There were plenty of other niche activities which we didn’t explore including a Barber shop, a hidden bar behind the barber shop and a roof top lounge (which was invite only).
Besides being a small holiday for my family, the purpose of the trip was to celebrate in the New Year together and our rooms afforded us a great view to do this. Take the time to watch my fireworks video below, it’s well worth it.
All in all the stay was great and i’d definitely do it again.
