Hotel Maya Kuala Lumpur

The Hotel Maya is a 5 star hotel located in the CBD of Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Ampang just down the street from the KLCC Shopping Center and Petronas Twin Towers.

The website talks highly of magnificent views of the twin towers but unfortunately my room was on the wrong side of the hotel.  Furthermore there is a huge building being constructed between the hotel and the towers which blocks a lot of the view.

On arrival it took a second to work out where I was going, with the actual concierge area being at the back of the building off the street and reception on the 2nd level.  I entered from the street side into the restaurant.  It didn’t take long for a concierge to find me and take me up to check in.

The check in staff were extremely friendly and offered me a drink while they completed their paperwork.  They also bumped my room up with an upgrade to a Deluxe Suite which I didn’t need to ask for so that was nice.

My room was on the 21st floor with views towards to Klang River.

The hotel building is kind of hollow with rooms around the outside and the inner core of the building being open at the bottom to the world outside.  This means the corridor balconies have some scary views down to the ground level and there is definitely humidity inside.

The room I was given was huge and comfortable with lots of creature comforts I wasn’t expecting.  The room with walk in closet and huge bathroom were comparable in size to my apartment back in Sydney.

Sorry my photos aren’t great, I should have taken them when I was checking in, not checking out.

The views from my side of the building weren’t the best.  There’s some high rise buildings but they block the view of the nearby KL Tower.  You can also see a carpark and a cemetery below and the river and freeway off to the right.

After settling in I headed down to the Sky Lounge to relax while a tropical storm rolled in.  The Sky Lounge is a casual restaurant / bar located on the 13th floor with both indoor and outdoor seating.  I spent a lot of time at night here as it is extremely quiet and peaceful albeit hot and humid.

The views afforded a glimpse of the right Twin Tower and a good view of the KL Tower and surrounding city buildings.

The room service menu is extensive with both western and asian dishes catered 24/7.

They actually had “Aussie” Beef Burgers on the menu which was kinda cool and they tasted great.

The room inclusions such as soaps etc were better than most other hotels I’ve stayed in with body lotions, bath crystals, toothbrush and shaving kits available in the bathroom.  There was even a writing kit located in the desk which had a pencil, pen, metal ruler, pencil sharpener and eraser in a small box.  (This made a great travel gift for one of my coworkers when I arrived back home).

The hotel is located only a short walk from the KLCC Shopping Center and Petronas Twin Towers and in the area there are many other restaurants, bars and shops.

Unfortunately I didn’t have much time to explore the local area further than KLCC and Petronas Towers.

As this was my first visit to KL and Malaysia I don’t have any other local hotels to compare with, but for the cost of the room (less than $100 AUD per day) it was definitely worth it.

The staff were all super friendly and helpful and the room was very comfortable.  The bed could have had a nicer mattress but it wasn’t a deal breaker.

The free wifi was always available but sometimes a little slow, especially in the room, not so much in the Sky Lounge.

Pro Tip: There is a pillow menu available, use it!
